Things to Know When Planning Your Safari

Weather

Kenya enjoys a tropical climate. It is hot and humid at the coast, temperate inland and very dry in the north and north-eastern parts of the country.

There is plenty of sunshine all year round and summer clothes are worn throughout the year. However, it is usually cool at night and early in the morning. The long rains occur from April to June and short rains from October to December.

The rainfall is sometimes heavy and when it does come it often falls in the afternoons and evenings. The hottest period is from February to March and coldest in July to August.

Going on a safari is a wonderful experience, whether it is your first time or you are an avid safari traveller. The opportunity to see wildlife in the natural habitat and to meet people from different cultures is a wonderful experience.

Kenya is a powerhouse when it comes to safari as it plays host to the "World's Greatest Spectacle"; the Wildebeest Migration. Although wildlife can be spotted all year round, you'll get a much good experience if you travel during the dry season. These are in the months of January to March.

April & May are rainy season. June to October is also a dry season and besides, you'll get to experience the Wildebeest Migration. The short rains are from November to December; you can get good sightings at this time. The scenery and landscape is lush and green and makes for ideal photographic safaris.

Passports & Visa

You will require a passport that is valid for the entire period of your travel and with enough pages for the visas. Most nationalities visiting East Africa need to obtain visas. Some nationals can obtain visa on arrival, while others need to apply in advance. Check with the respective country’s embassy or consulate before making any travel plans.

The annual migration of wildlife between Serengeti in Tanzania and Maasai Mara in Kenya takes place between June and September. The migration of almost two million wildebeest, zebras and other species is nature's greatest spectacle on earth.

The animal trek has been captured by filmmakers worldwide. To best experience this spectacle, it is advisable to book in advance (3 to 6 months) as most lodges operate at full occupancy.
